It is not a queue that grows on a busy weekend, and it is not raised for groups. When the 40 are taken, the day is closed, and the next person books a different date.
As of 6 September 2026, our reading of the portal shows 22 dates open for Ettina Bhuja, the earliest on 9 September. That figure moves every hour, which is exactly why it is worth understanding how the system behaves rather than memorising a number.
Where Ettina Bhuja actually sits
Ettina Bhuja is in Chikkamagaluru district, in the Western Ghats, and the name means “bull’s shoulder” — which is what the summit ridge looks like from the approach. It is one of the shorter Ghats climbs, which is part of why it fills: it is reachable from Bengaluru in a night drive and does not demand a two-day commitment.
Because it sits under the Forest Department’s permit system, the trail is not open to walk-ups. A permit is checked at the base. Arriving without one is a wasted drive, and this is the single most common way people lose a weekend on Karnataka treks.
How the daily cap behaves
Three things are worth knowing about a 40-permit ceiling:
- Weekend dates go first. Saturday and Sunday clear far faster than a Tuesday. If your dates are flexible at all, a weekday is the difference between walking and not walking.
- New dates appear at midnight. The portal releases forward dates on its own schedule, and the useful window is the small hours rather than the working day.
- A closed date can reopen. Cancellations return permits to the pool, so a date that looked shut in the morning is sometimes open by evening. Checking once is not the same as checking.
Check before you drive
The Forest Department portal is the authority, and it is the only place a permit is actually issued. What it does not do well is give you a single view across treks — you check one trail at a time, and the interface assumes you already know which name the department uses.

What to expect on the trail
Ettina Bhuja is a climb of a few hours to a grassland ridge, with the last section open and exposed. In the weeks after the monsoon the grass is at its greenest and the visibility is the best of the year, which is the season people wait for. That same window is when the 40-permit cap bites hardest.
Carry water for the full climb — there is no reliable source on the ridge — and start early enough that you are off the exposed section before the afternoon. The forest gate has its own timings, and being late at the bottom means being turned around rather than being let through.
