Forest entry permission and a mandatory local guide are arranged by Travel Elneeru - no separate booking needed.
The Aranya Vihara portal releases 40 permits a day for this trail, the lowest of the fourteen we follow, so dates go sooner than on the larger trails.
Carry a government-issued photo ID (Driving License or PAN Card preferred, or Voter ID / Passport / Ration Card). Names are checked against the permit at the forest check post.
Single-use plastics, alcohol, and smoking are not permitted as per forest rules.
Etthina Bhuja is graded Easy by the Karnataka Forest Department and the walk is about 5 km, which makes it one of the more approachable trails on the Aranya Vihara system and a reasonable first Western Ghats trek.
That does not mean flat. There is a steady climb through forest before the trail steps out onto the open shoulder, and the ridgeline section has no shade and no water, so carry two litres in your pack and start early as the itinerary does. Anyone who walks regularly and can keep going uphill for a couple of hours will be comfortable.
In and just after the monsoon the forest stretch is wet underfoot and leeches are about, which is the main reason to prefer the drier months if this is someone's first trek rather than their fifth.
The grading shown in the spec panel at the top of this page is the Forest Department's own.
There is no genuinely hard section on Etthina Bhuja - it is graded Easy and the distance is short. The two things that catch people are the steady gradient through the forest stretch, which is more sustained than the Easy grade suggests, and the open ridgeline above it, where there is no shade and no water at all. In and just after the monsoon the forest ground is wet rock and leeches are present through that lower section.
Prepare with regular cardio (brisk walking, jogging, or cycling) 3β4 times a week for at least a month before the trek, plus stair climbing to build leg strength and endurance for the steep summit push.

Lush and green but trails are slippery with leeches present. Heavier rain increases difficulty on the steep summit sections. Recommended only for experienced trekkers.
Trails are drier and greenery is still fresh, offering the best balance of grip, comfort, and clear summit views.
Cool, dry conditions with good visibility from the summit. Carry warm layers for chilly mornings and the overnight homestay stay.
