Overview

Karshigudda is a Forest Department trail in the Kalasa and Horanadu belt of Chikkamagaluru district, and it is one of the newer walks to open on the Aranya Vihara permit system. You will also see it written Karshi Gudda, Krishi Gudda, Krushi Gudda and Karushi Gudda, and in Kannada as ಕರ್ತಿಗುಡ್ಡ - the portal lists it as Karshigudda, and that is the spelling that appears on your permit.

The Forest Department grades it Hard, three out of three, which is worth taking seriously. It is about 7 km and roughly three hours of climbing on the trail itself, out of forest cover onto an open shoulder before the final push to the top. Our group starts at 8:30 in the morning from the homestay side and is usually on the summit around midday, eats there, and is back down by evening.

The weekend is built around the walk rather than only being the walk. The same trip takes in the Annapoorneshwari temple at Horanadu, the Kalasa hanging bridge, and Soormane or Kodige Falls on the second morning - all of them close by, and none of them on the trail itself.

November to February is the clearest and driest window and the best time to come. June to September is green and dramatic but wet, slippery and leech-prone underfoot.

Who Can Do This?

Karshigudda is graded Hard by the Karnataka Forest Department - three out of three on their own scale - so treat it as a trek for people who already walk. It suits someone with a few Western Ghats days behind them and the fitness to keep climbing for about three hours without the day falling apart.

It is not long. About 7 km on the trail is a short outing by distance, and that is exactly what catches people out: the length is modest because the gradient is not. There is a sustained climb out of the forest and an open shoulder above it with little shade and no water, and the final section is steep enough that you will be using your hands on loose ground in places.

It is a poor first trek, and a poor choice in heavy monsoon for anyone unsure on wet rock. Bring someone who is new to this on Tadiandamol or Kodachadri instead and save this one for their third or fourth trip.

The grading shown in the spec panel at the top of this page is the Forest Department's own.

⚠️

Where It Gets Difficult

The hard part is the last section to the Karshigudda summit. Above the open shoulder the trail steepens onto loose ground, and there are short stretches where you will want a hand down on the slope rather than walking it upright. Nothing is technical and nothing needs a rope, but that section is the reason the Forest Department grades this trail three out of three. In and just after the monsoon the forest stretch lower down is wet rock with leeches.

Fitness Requirement

Prepare with regular cardio (brisk walking, jogging, or cycling) 3–4 times a week for at least a month before the trek, plus stair climbing to build leg strength and endurance for the steep summit push.

Route Breakdown

πŸš—
Kalasa to the trailhead
The group stays near Kalasa and goes up to the trailhead by jeep after breakfast - the last stretch of track is not something a bus takes. The exact forest check post is named on your permit, and names are checked against it there.
🌲
Into the forest
The walk starts under tree cover on a defined path and begins climbing almost straight away. This is the shaded part of the day and it is the part people underestimate, because the gradient is already working. In and just after the monsoon expect wet rock and leeches through here.
🌿
Out onto the open shoulder
The canopy thins and the trail steps out onto open grass shoulder with the Western Ghats opening up behind you. There is no shade from here and no water, so this is where the two litres in your pack start to matter. On a clear November morning this is the view you came for.
β›°
The summit push
The final section is the steep one. Loose ground underfoot and short stretches where you will want a hand down on the slope rather than walking it upright. It is not technical and there is no exposure that needs a rope, but it is the reason the Forest Department grades this trail three out of three.
🍴
Lunch on top, then back the same way
We are usually on the summit around midday and eat the packed lunch there before turning round. The descent uses the same route and takes longer than people expect on the loose upper section. Back at the homestay by evening for the campfire.

How to Reach

Karshigudda sits in Chikkamagaluru district, in the Kalasa and Horanadu belt on the western edge of the Western Ghats. The trail begins near the Horanadu forest checkpost, and the exact post is named on your permit.

From Bengaluru the usual road runs via Hassan, Belur and Mudigere and then drops west towards Kalasa. On our weekend departure this is done overnight - boarding from about 9:30 PM in the city, roughly nine hours on the road including stops, and arrival at the homestay near Kalasa around 6:30 AM. The last stretch is narrow estate and ghat road, so it is slower than the map suggests, particularly in the dark and in the monsoon.

Coming independently, the practical approach is an overnight bus from Bengaluru to Kalasa or to Horanadu, both of which are served from the city, then a local jeep for the final approach to the checkpost. Horanadu is also the Annapoorneshwari temple town, so buses run there more reliably than the trail traffic alone would justify.
