Kudremukha is a long, rolling, fully exposed day on open grassland. Doing it yourself is entirely possible — provided the permit, the bed at Mullodi and the jeep are locked before you leave Bengaluru.

Kudremukh National Park caps daily trekker numbers and the permit is checked at the gate. Slots open on Aranya Vihaara 30 days ahead, and the weekend ones go first. Nothing else you book matters until this is confirmed.
Tips from our guides
Book the same ID you will carry — the checkpost matches name to ID, and a mismatch turns you back at the gate.
Weekend slots for the popular peaks are gone within hours of the 30-day window opening. Set an alarm.
KSRTC runs this route. Take an overnight service — a dawn arrival in Kalasa is the only one that leaves enough daylight to finish the trek the same day. Anything later and you are committing to a second night.
Tips from our guides
If Kalasa is sold out, a Horanadu or Sringeri bus gets you close enough to pick up a local connection.
The last leg in. Shared autos and jeeps run from the Kalasa stand through the morning; the local bus is cheaper but leaves on its own schedule. Small fares, cash only — a phone number beats a checkout here.
Tips from our guides
Draw cash in Kalasa. There is none further in.
Message a driver the night before, not the morning of.
Mullodi is the last settlement before the trail, and its homestays are the most booked-out thing on this trek. They also tend to run the jeeps and pack your lunch — which is why sorting the bed usually sorts the other two as well.
Tips from our guides
Ask them to pack lunch. There is nowhere to buy food on the trail.
Book well ahead for a weekend — there are only a handful of houses.

The track on from Mullodi is a broken jeep road that gets genuinely bad in the monsoon. Walking it costs you hours you will want later on the ridge.
Tips from our guides
Book the return leg at the same time — finding a jeep down in the evening is luck, not planning.
We do not sell this leg yet. Tell us what you need and we will arrange it by hand.
This is a long day on open grassland with almost no shade and no reliable water source after the early streams. Carry more water than you think. Leeches are relentless through the monsoon months. Start at first light — the forest gate turns back late starters, and it is right to.
Tips from our guides
Wear proper trail shoes. The grass slopes are slick even when they look dry.
Plastic is checked and logged at the gate — decant snacks before you arrive.
You will lose phone signal past Samse. Download your offline map first.
Worth an extra half-day
Hanuman Gundi Falls
Inside the national park, reached down a long flight of stone steps. Best right after the rains.
Kudremukh Peak viewpoint
The horse-face profile that gives the peak its name, seen properly from the road rather than from on top of it.
Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple
The temple that famously feeds every visitor. The obvious stop on the drive back out.
Sringeri Sharada Peetham
Riverside temple town on the Tunga. An easy unwind before the night bus home.
