Kodachadri sits inside the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary and every trekker is recorded at the forest checkpost. Travel Elneeru arranges the trek permit for the batch and carries it, so you are not dealing with paperwork at seven in the morning.
Driving licence, PAN, Voter ID, Passport or Aadhaar. Names are checked against the batch list at the checkpost, and the network at the base is patchy enough that a photo on your phone is not something to rely on.
The itinerary puts you at the base for the night and treats the ridge as a daylight visit. Nothing heavy goes up with you and nothing has to be packed down in the dark.
Bottles, wrappers and packaging go back into your pack. Alcohol, loudspeakers and open fires have no place inside a wildlife sanctuary, and the forest staff are strict about it.
The track from the base up towards the ridge is used by licensed local jeeps and is not driveable in an ordinary car. That jeep leg is part of the trek, both on the way up and coming back.
A good second or third trek rather than a first one. Kodachadri asks for a full day on your feet rather than any technical skill: the jeep takes the steepest of the climb, but the Hidlumane Falls section is a scramble over wet rock and the walk down off the ridge is long. Anyone who walks regularly and is steady on uneven ground will finish it comfortably. It is not the trek to bring someone who has never walked a hill, and it is not one to attempt in trainers.
Two sections do the damage. Hidlumane Falls is an upward scramble on rock that runs with water most of the year - hands are involved, the holds are slick, and it comes in the afternoon when you have already walked all morning. The other is the descent off the ridge: long, on loose grass and stone, and knees that felt fine going up will have opinions coming down. The jeep track itself is rough enough that a few people find the ride harder than the walking.
Three to four weeks of preparation is enough for most people. Jog or brisk-walk 5 km three times a week and add one longer walk of 8 km or more at the weekend. Put some ankle and balance work in alongside it, because the falls section is loose wet rock rather than a staircase and that is where tired legs cost you. If you can climb six floors without stopping, you are in the right shape for this one.
Lush, dramatic, and at its peak. Forests turn vivid green, waterfalls appear, and mist adds a surreal feel. Expect slippery trails, near-constant rain (carry a raincoat), and leeches. Challenging but highly rewarding, with good summit views when clouds clear.
Greenery continues, but trails are drier and more grippy, making the trek easier. Rain is less frequent but unpredictable (carry a raincoat). Offers the best balance of comfort and scenery, with higher chances of clear skies and excellent views.
Cool mornings and comfortable conditions. Trails are easy to walk, and visibility is often excellent. Greenery starts to fade. Carry an extra layer for mornings, summit winds, and overnight stays.
Pack light but pack smart. Everything you bring, you carry on your back.

We enjoyed the trek, it was my second time at Kodachadri the first time I had climbed fully - this time, forest dept allowed trek only till hidlumane falls and back (rest in jeep till like 95% of the peak). The homestay was comfortable - though we were short of few beds. The trek leader was a nice chap. Now coming to the feedback - disappointed - as trekkers from 4 different organisations combined to form almost a 50 member team led by a nice but inexperienced student who could not take any solid decision - be it the itinerary, managing timing, stop for journey breaks. He checked with the team everytime for every small thing and always got conflicting views and hence utterly confused. The co-trekkers threw plastic bottles from the bus, played loud music non stop in the bus, infact the trek leader himself played DJ music right after leaving Bangalore even past midnight. It was not a pleasant experience. After doing more than 20 treks in Karnataka and 6 in the high altitude Himalayas, and then this trek, I will not recommend Travel Elneeru because of the above experience. Long way to go, hopefully the organisation learns to be better
